Organism

Monday, March 12th, 2007

THE TEXT BELOW IS FROM MY PERSONAL WORK BOOK
Yet another evening and entire day coding in flash, Our organism project is now starting to take form, we currently have collision detections, random movement (x, y & spinning), death, growth and feeding.

Created in flash the organisms are created entirely from code. Using the flash api we have created an aesthetically pleasing mite like object which has the attributes of a moving creature.

Firstly the user is asked to select how many life forms to spawn. This can be any where in the region of 3 - 50 (50 due to flash not coping with any more vectors).

When loaded, the application assigns the following attributes to each life form.

  • Width
  • Height
  • Spikiness
  • Alpha (transparency)
  • location in the environment

Then the organism begins. Each life forms detect when one another collides, this causes them to spin off in a different direction. They move in a controlled random way from their original x,y co-ordinates depending on there location, collision detection and previous movements.

The Life form attributes:

  • Each life form can die if no interaction occurs.
  • Life remain for ever if the user feeds the life form
  • Grown after being fed (to its maximum size)

To add interactivity to the process of life and death we have included a click to kill method.
If the user clicks on a life form, it will result in the death of a life. Alternatively non feeding of the organism will cause it to die.

Augmented Proposal - Unfinished

Augvision

For this project I began to think of new and original ideas which hadn’t really been thought of or which don’t already exist, and this proved harder than you think. I wanted to create a concept which was relevant to me, something that could revolutionise the way in which people interact with a number of cross media platforms. As a regular train user, commuter and newspaper reader I began to ponder on the idea of a digital newspaper. Travelling every day causes a number of stresses for nearly all users. As a regular paper reader I am always faced with the same issues.

The extra time needed to buy a newspaper may seem minimal but when queues form at the local newsagent or depot the impact can effect your whole day, setting your mood for the day. Additionally the hassle of carrying cash adds to this stress.

Newspapers have many down sides. The paper its self it made from RECYCLED PAPER, which yes does helps the environment but why use any paper? The design of the newspaper is done so in the effort to create quick publication and little waste. This comes at a cost. Pages are not fixed together, adverts and flyers fall out. Imagine the benefits to a single page newspaper. The printing process takes time and money and is not always accurate; images become blurry/fuzzy causing the overall product NOT VERY GOOD. The ink used to create the print is BIODEGRADABLE but it can smudge, and in turn case inky hands.

Now to discuss the positive factors of the proposed product.

What if consumers never had to visit the newsagents again?

By not visiting the newsagents/retail outlet the user could save a vast amount of time, Imagine not having to queue for a 60p item ever again?

The system would allow users access to every tabloid newspaper from around the world as well as magazines.

So how does the system work?

The system relies on a number of technological factors to achieve the desired result. A set of Augmented glasses will be the main aspect of the product used to vision the streaming content. These are worn just like any other pair of glasses but are connected to the internet via wireless connections. A micro wireless adapter is installed and configured to connect to the free internet infrastructure in towns, cities, transport and even your home.

Is it really possible?

It would it be a feasible plan to implement, bearing in mind technological factors as well as the over all aesthetic and design as this of course could make or break the product. The user could have downloadable access to every world wide newspaper or magazine any where in the world. A must have for some business men/women.

Via streaming content the newspaper could display news headline videos, zoom able text for small print sections. The abilities are endless!

So what can we do with the system?

Originally the systems plans were only based on a digital newspaper reader, although the system now comes with photo display. Why stop at newspapers? As the social environment in which the product would be used is a commuting community video implementation could be feasible idea.

No longer does the user get in a mess with sheets upon sheets of newspapers. Pages can be switched at the click of a ‘button’. By including micro SD card readers it could allow the user to import there own videos or even create a photo montage/slideshow.

Who is it for?

The system has been designed for all ages, sexes and nationalities. However with build in language conversion software it’s possible that all formats can be accessed and viewed by nearly anyone.

The main people expected to use the vision system would be business men/women who have hectic lifestyles, saving not only time, but money.Save the environment.
The effects of the mass implementation of this product would in turn help save the environment dramatically. Physical newspapers, magazines and other print based products could be eradicated.

Brain Wave

Monday, March 12th, 2007

I have finally come up with an idea for the augmented reality.

The idea is designed for business men/women where we eliminate the physical newspaper. I plan to allow the user access to all available news by integrating augmented glasses with a foldable tablet (used to display the data). The user will be able to see streaming video, scrolling headlines, zoom enabled text fields.

Now I have the concept I can move on to initial ideas and designs.

Watch this space.
