User Submissions section now up and running

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

I have finally come to a solution for displaying user readymade images. Using a flash file uploader and a php image gallery, users can now submit their readymade art works online. This is now linked in to the project and as you can see users have begun to start adding content.

The gallery displays the most recent art work first and displays the image name as the alt tag.

By using the flash uploader it allows the user to browse for files, upload and see the progress of the upload in %. Once their upload has been completed they will then be taken to the gallery page where their latest submission.

When the user clicks on an uploaded piece of art they will be taken to a larger view, this informs them when it was uploaded and shows the image in full size view.

What already exists?

So the concept generator?
Before continuing with my research i must answer the following questions:
What already exists?
To what extent do they provide a solution?

After trawling through many sites, search engines and reading material i stumbled across a concept generator by VISPO. An online site which includes a number of generative art pieces.

http://vispo.com/dbcinema/

The features that this concept generator offer to the user:
Choose your search engine. You can choose google, yahoo, google then yaho or yahoo then google. When trying these methods it is apparent there is a clear difference in the returned images.

The limitations to this application is that the user can only search for a concept. I propose to offer users a concept drawn from a number of areas.

Using an online image ripper created by dearcomputer.nl i am currently ripping images from there google image rippper. At present im finding it hard to rip the html from a search directly from the google homepage. I believe that google recognises that php is not actually a browser.

Where to Start

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

So I still have no concept! So it’s time to make something to really get this module going.
As discussed earlier about my proposal to create a concept generator. This is where I will base my starting point. The plan is to generate a concepts from online resources all in one place, a tool used for research, development and implementation of a final product. From this I hope to discover what, if any concept I can create/focus on.

The plan so far is to create an application in flash which will provide search engine results in one location, witling down results to a bare minimum to help research a key area. This I will do using a number of technologies, Flash, Actionscript 2, PHP, Google Web and Image Search, Artistquotes.net and Wikipedia for some web 2 content.

With this information the user will be able to see artists work, links to websites containing information about their work and any other relevant topics.

Rite on with coding it.

Research

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

At this stage I am still very undecided on my concepts and ideas I still have no real direction for where this project is going to start or finish. To get a better understanding of some areas of digital art I decided to investigate and research into identity and self representation online. Below are a number of resources I have found.

After looking into this area I really felt that the topic was over used, over investigated and what do the representations really mean. So the search continues for my concept….

Organism

Monday, March 12th, 2007

THE TEXT BELOW IS FROM MY PERSONAL WORK BOOK
Yet another evening and entire day coding in flash, Our organism project is now starting to take form, we currently have collision detections, random movement (x, y & spinning), death, growth and feeding.

Created in flash the organisms are created entirely from code. Using the flash api we have created an aesthetically pleasing mite like object which has the attributes of a moving creature.

Firstly the user is asked to select how many life forms to spawn. This can be any where in the region of 3 - 50 (50 due to flash not coping with any more vectors).

When loaded, the application assigns the following attributes to each life form.

  • Width
  • Height
  • Spikiness
  • Alpha (transparency)
  • location in the environment

Then the organism begins. Each life forms detect when one another collides, this causes them to spin off in a different direction. They move in a controlled random way from their original x,y co-ordinates depending on there location, collision detection and previous movements.

Organisum

The Life form attributes:

  • Each life form can die if no interaction occurs.
  • Life remain for ever if the user feeds the life form
  • Grown after being fed (to its maximum size)

To add interactivity to the process of life and death we have included a click to kill method.
If the user clicks on a life form, it will result in the death of a life. Alternatively non feeding of the organism will cause it to die.

EXTRACTED FROM PENCIL WORKBOOK

amvisible.co.uk - Get noticed!

Production:
The overall production and creation of the site was done in a professional manner, all of our deadlines and criteria came together in a well presented website, designed to target the corporate sector of the market.

Website:
The websites purpose was to display our services, previous work and offer a quote service and sell our photography online.

The functionality of the photography section was called to a halt as we would really need to purchase secure server hosting space to enable online purchases. But the concept for this project is there.

Group:
Although our group only consisted of 2 group members, we found that this made the project some what easier/whilst still challenging. Having only 2 members did put a lot of pressure to create good content, design and functionality, but it enabled a much better communication relationship as all members attended each meeting and the work allocation was displaced equally.
