Simulacrum 3D Architecture

FLASH, ACTIONSCRIPT, CONCEPT

Simulacrum

The following text is an extract from my blog.

Finally I managed to find a book in the library that I needed, after many visits the books have come back. I managed to located some interesting books from the library, focusing upon architecture and postmodern styles. They are as follows: -Idea, Form, And Architecture - Design Principles in Contemporary Architecture by Egon Schirmbeck -The Post Modern Arts Edited by Nigel Wheale -The Language of Post-Modern Architecture by Charles Jencks Whilst doing some internet investigation into modern designs I also stumbled across the following: After purchasing a copy of Spaces Issue 18 2006 (See below image) a number of designs began to influence my ideas. Many designs challenge the functionality of the ideological home. The magazine featured a stunning article on modern design incorporating reclaimed materials, from cargo container2s to used construction materials. “We have all heard the horror stories of the homeless living in tips. But what are we supposed to make of a man who could quite frankly live anywhere he wants. yet chooses to live in shipping container2s and reclaimed construction material.” (Extract from spaces issue 18 2006 - Noel Montrucchio).

“Postmodern (or post-modern) architecture evolved from Modernism, yet it rebels against that style. Modernism is viewed as excessively minimalist, anonymous, monotonous, and boring. Postmodernism has a sense of humour. The style often combines two or more very different elements. A Postmodern house may combine traditional with invented forms or use familiar shapes in surprising, unexpected ways. In other words, postmodern houses often don’t have anything in common with one another, other than their lack of commonality. Postmodern houses may be bizarre, humorous, or shocking, but they are always unique. Sometimes the term Postmodern is loosely used to describe Neoeclectic homes that combine a variety of historic styles. However, unless there is a sense of surprise, irony, or originality, a neoeclectic home is not truly postmodern. Postmodern houses are also sometimes called “Contemporaries,” but a true Contemporary Style house does not incorporate traditional or historical architectural details.” Extract from “http://architecture.about.com/od/periodsstyles/ig/House-Styles/Postmodern-Style.htm“ This is the style I am trying to tackle with my 3d project. Postmodern style to me incorporates many different styles, ideas and methods evolved from the modernist theory's . I propose to design an architectural piece incorporating materials from all over the globe, the materials are yet to be decided but will include woods, glass, stone work even paint. This will be difficult to symbolise in 3d but i'm going to have a go.

For the 3d project my aim is to create a naturally constructed building created from recycled materials. Society still has the view that recycled materials are second hand and less superior, I aim to reject these views by including them in the design of my house. Used materials add character and history to a building and as an aesthetic enhance the visual experience. My main materials I wish to use are as follows. The walls and main carcass of the structure will be constructed of recycled household bricks, this follows traditional and pre-traditional architectural principles but uses old architecture to create a seemingly new design. Steel girders reclaimed from shipping yards or construction sites will be used to support the lower floor roofing section. Naturally worn driftwood flooring will be fitted throughout the construction. The lightness and smoothness of the woods texture creates a subtle mood. Using such wood is environmentally friendly as the wood is found or “reclaimed”. With the sea waters erosion on the wood the world has left it's mark, just as the building will make a mark on the world. The main feature to the building is obviously the large glass panes. These are created using ground concrete and waste glass. These can be easily sourced from recycling centers and the concrete from any type of builders rubble. Recycled latex paint will be used on the walls and some exterior sections.

Well at last after many other projects finished the “Simulacrum” is really starting to take shape. After waiting a whopping 10 hours for a 30 second scene to render things are looking quite good. The materials and textures are making a difference. There is only another 60 seconds of film left to render, so that’s probably about……. another 20 hours of not being able to use my laptop in fear of crashing it whilst it renders. Unfortunately due to the sheer complexity of my design the video size has been compromised to 320 x 240 this is just due to the fact that rendering it any larger would mean days of waiting which isn’t really feasible for the time scale left for this project. I ’ve spent most of the evening typing up my notes from my work book from previous lectures and books. Just need to scan in some of the images and cut outs before posting it all up.

Choosing the right type of music is always a hard decision. I wanted to keep the mood relaxed and calm. The music would need to start off very subtle and build up to a more dramatic yet still calm melody. What better than massive attack - Teardrop. Obviously I would have to edit the singing out as this is not relevant. This is also recycling old material. The song was released in April 27 1998 but still fits in with today's popular music.

The house reflects the re-use and re-interpretation of traditional materials and building techniques in a post-modern design. Architecture is symbolic of society and peoples dreams and aspirations are reflected in the buildings they construct. The house alone paints an interesting picture of society’s priorities in the early 21st century with it's use of reclaimed materials and sharp unforgiving lines (put quote in here about architectural school etc).

Well the project is coming on well, most of the videos are rendered now, I just need adjust one video then create the sequence in premier. For once my video format will follow the story board the I created in the early stages. My main objectives are to create a sense of linear narrative by creating a build up sequence with the footage that I have already. By using blending techniques or dissolves I think I should be able to create a realistic looking build sequence, kind of like a stop animation sequence. The camera fly's in over the ground, when the base is added, followed by scaffolding, floor 1, floor 2 then the removal of the scaffolding. This will give the illusion that the building has actually been sculpted and created from the bottom up. Below you can see some screen shots of some of the video clips.
